BREAKING UP YOUR FALLOW GROUND

OLUBI JOHNSON

Hosea 10:12 MKJV
Sow to yourselves in righteousness, reap in mercy; break up your fallow ground. For it is time to seek Jehovah, until He comes and rains righteousness on you.

Our uncultivated souls are like fallow ground: our wills are still stubborn, our minds are not renewed and enlightened by revelation knowledge, and our emotions are not dominated by the fruit of the Spirit.

Hence it needs to be ‘broken up’ and ‘cultivated’ by the power of the Holy Spirit (Rom. 8:26-29).

The Holy Spirit through intercession in tongues and deep groanings, breaks the stubbornness of the human will (Col. 4:12; Lev. 26:19).

This is what transforms us from being just ‘children’ to becoming ‘sons’ of God (Gal. 4:19).

Deep praying provides, as it were, ‘underground irrigation’ for our souls, causing the ‘wilderness’ and the ‘deserts’ of our souls to become fruitful ground (Isa. 35:1-2; Isa. 43:19).

The Lord Jesus Himself prayed in this manner with deep, strong groaning, or crying, as a daily habit when He was on the earth, and this is how He grew in wisdom and stature into full spiritual maturity (Heb. 5:7; Luk. 2:40, 52).

It is instructive to observe that the problems in the different kinds of ground described by the Lord Jesus in the parable of the sower are solved by deep, strong intercession of the Spirit:

1). The wayside heart is given understanding and light (Matt. 13:19).

2). The stony heart is strengthened with divine determination during tribulations and afflictions (Mk. 4:16-17; Phil. 2:13).

3). The thorny heart overcomes the thorns by the power of the Spirit that brings discipline into the heart (Mk. 4:17).

4). The good ground heart becomes progressively fruitful by the diligence brought into the soul (Mk. 4:20).

As we pray regularly with tongues and groaning, or travail, as a daily, weekly and monthly habit, over time we will break up our ‘fallow ground’ (Isa. 35:6-7).

This will enable the seed of God’s Word which we plant and water daily by hearing, reading, speaking and practicing the Word, to bring forth much fruit in us, causes us to come into the experience of cleansing perfection and start operating under ‘open heavens’.
