CHRISTIAN PERFECTION
OLUBI JOHNSON
Ephesians 4:12-13 (KJV)
For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ: Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ.
Perfection is a spiritual condition in which the nature of God totally dominates or has completely cleansed out the sin nature in the soul and flesh (2Cor. 7:1).
We need to understand that sin is firstly a nature and substance, which then produces a sinful conduct or behavior (Rom. 5:12-14). All men inherited this sin nature from birth, because of the original sin of Adam and Eve in the garden of Eden (Ps. 51:5).
When we are born-again, the nature of God, eternal life, or living water, is planted into our spirits as a seed, just like what happens to a woman when she is impregnated with the seed of a man (1Pet. 1:23).
However, the nature of sin is still in the soul and in the flesh; that is why there is a conflict between the born-again spirit and the flesh (Gal. 5:17).
When the sin nature in the flesh has been completely cleansed out of the soul and the flesh, then perfection in conduct or behavior can now become a reality.
Perfection is first a perfection in the inner nature of the soul and flesh, before it manifests outwardly as perfection in conduct (1Pet. 5:10).
These four levels of perfection are revealed in scripture:
1. Perfect— Dominion perfection – dominion over the sin nature in spirit, soul and body by the divine nature (Ps.119: 132-133).
2. Stablish— Cleansing perfection – a spiritual state in which all the sin nature has been cleansed out of the soul and body by the power of the Holy Spirit, through the use of the Word of God (2Cor. 7:1; Eph. 5:25-27).
3. Strengthen – Manifesting perfection – the purified nature of the soul and body has been sufficiently trained to manifest the power of the life of God in the physical body like Jesus (Acts 10:38).
4. Settle— Permanent perfection – the divine nature, through practice and exercise of doing the will of God, has caused the will to be permanently fixed in the will of God. There is then no more sin, not only in nature but also in conduct. In this state, the scripture says, one cannot sin (1Jn. 3:9; Jn.15:7,16).
These show that if the nature of God is allowed to develop in the Christian’s life, it can bear permanent fruit in the spirit, soul and body and experience permanent perfection
