EXPERIENCING THE FULNESS OF GOD

OLUBI JOHNSON

Colossians 2:9 KJV: For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily.

Here we are told that the fulness of the Godhead dwells bodily in Christ.
What is the fullness of the Godhead?

We have to understand that when Christ took upon Himself the form of man; he left His original form as God in all of its omnipotence, omniscience and omnipresence in the care of the other two Persons of the Godhead: the Father and the Holy Spirit (Phil 2:5-7).

This original form of God is the fulness of God the Son; the combination of this form of God of all the three Persons of the Godhead is the fulness of the Godhead.

The majesty and size of the heavens (Ps. 19:1) seen just in the observable universe show us how big God is (while also taking into account the 2nd and 3rd heavens (2 Cor.12:2) using Mk. 4:20 in the manifold wisdom of God as a type) relative to man and our observable universe.

Now, this bodily-fulness of the Godhead was available and functional (i.e. ‘dwelleth in’) through the physical body of the Lord Jesus Christ when he was here on earth, when he had reached spiritual maturity and so was entrusted with the Spirit without measure (Jn. 3:34).

It was with this bodily-fulness of the Godhead, or Spirit without measure, given in response to the prayers (Heb. 5:7) of the Lord Jesus, in His state of spiritual maturity (He could not do these things when He was 12 years old!), that He was able to perform miracles like feeding the five thousand with five loaves and two fishes (Jn. 6:9-13); walking on water (Jn.6:19); turning water into wine (Jn. 2:7-11).

It is pertinent here to state that all power comes from God and then through Him it is used to create and sustain creation and ultimately circulates back to Him (Romans 11:36). So God always has a relatively (with respect to the 1st and 2nd heavens) infinite amount of power available to Him to do miracles in the physical world whenever He finds a suitable channel (Ps. 115:16, Ezk. 22:30) on the earth through which to release His power. This is why ‘with God all things are possible’ (Mk. 10:27) and ‘all things are possible to him that believeth’ (Mk.9:23).

Amazingly in His wonderful grace, God has made this same fulness available to us individually and collectively (through covering) if we will, like the Lord Jesus, grow into spiritual maturity in perfection (John 14:12).
