HIS COMMANDMENTS ARE NOT GRIEVOUS

1John 5:3 KJV
For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous.

Specifically, what are His commandments?
The commandment is two-fold: believe on His Name to receive eternal life (Jn. 20:31), and love one another as He gave commandment (1Jn. 3:23).

The commandment to love one another as He loves, is superior to the Old Testament love commandment. This is because it demands loving with divine love, and not just human love.

The Lord Jesus tells us that His yoke is easy and His burden is light (Matt. 11:30). The commandment is not grievous because it is kept by the ability of the divine life, which comes by mercy and grace through faith (Eph. 2:8), and not through human effort. This is why it is sure to all the seed (Rom. 4:16; 1Cor. 15:10).

We obey God’s Word by:

  • Saying it with our mouths to release the power of God in sufficient measure by grace and mercy (Deut. 30:11-15, 19-20).
  • Saying it in our hearts with a determination to act on it, and then practicing and acting on it (Rom. 10:6-8).
  • Praying with all types of prayer in the Spirit at the start of each day and subsequently, briefly (about 1-2 mins) once every six hours (Dt. 6:7), at every opportunity, in every temptation, asking for mercy, and acting on the Word with our thoughts and actions.

By doing this, we will not find doing God’s commandments grievous. We can and should perfect the love of God, using God’s Word, the Blood and the power of the Spirit.

Matthew 11:30 NKJV
For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.”
