LEVITES, PRIESTS AND KINGS

OLUBI JOHNSON

Hebrews 5:6 KJV
As He saith also in another place, “Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec.”

David (being prefigured by Melchisedec and prefiguring the Lord Jesus) was the only one who combined the anointings of the Priest and the King in the Old Testament.

Although we start off as ordinary Levites in the New Testament, we are also expected to combine the anointings of the Priest and the King (Zech. 6:12-13).

All priests were Levites, but not all Levites became priests (Num. 8:24; Num. 4:2-4). Every Levite by birth had to serve in the Tabernacle from twenty-five years old. At the age of thirty, if chosen, they then become priests.

What is the spiritual reality of these things to us today as New Testament Christians?

All born again Christians are born as Levites and serve in the Tabernacle: God’s dwelling place, initially restricted to the ‘Outer Court’.

This means our prayer life is initially restricted to using our mental understanding and not with revelation. At this level we often end up asking God for things that are childish and utopic, because of our superficial knowledge of the scriptures (1Cor. 13:11; Eph. 4:14).

As we grow spiritually from spiritual childhood to manhood (Eph. 4:15), we make the transition from being a ‘Levite’ to becoming a priest serving in the Holy Place.

Here our understanding is enlightened (Eph.1:16-23) with the light of revelation knowledge, symbolized by the candlestick. We can also eat of the shewbread , the Bread of life (Jn. 6:35): receiving the life of God through the written Word (2Pet. 1:4).

Furthermore, we can now offer incense at the altar of incense; praying in the Spirit with tongues (1Cor. 14:2) and travail (Rom. 8:26; Gal. 4:19; Heb. 5:7) with all kinds of prayer (Eph. 6:18).

It is this type of praying that takes us within the veil into the Holiest of all, which contains the Ark of the Covenant and the mercy seat from where we can sit and reign with God as Kings in Christ Jesus (Rev. 1:6; Eph. 2:6).

We are to make the transition from being Levites to Priests and then finally kings in Christ Jesus (Rev. 1:6; Eph. 2:6).

We accomplish harmony between the offices of Priests and Kings by wise spiritual time-management. This involves habitual, daily prayer in the third and fourth watch; staying in fellowship with God throughout the day; praying every six hours, at every opportunity and in every temptation.

Then we can be effective in our Kingly ministry of exercising divine dominion in all we do, to show forth spiritual excellence like Daniel did (Dan. 6:1-4; Dan 6:10).
