OVERCOMING TEMPTATIONS
Luke 4:1-13 KJV
And Jesus being full of the Holy Ghost returned from Jordan, and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness, Being forty days tempted of the devil…And Jesus answered him, saying, it is written, that man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God…Jesus answered and said unto him, get thee behind me, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve…And Jesus answering said unto him, it is said, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God
It is instructive to note that the temptations the Lord Jesus encountered in Luke 4:1-13 were all at the thought level. The devil did not speak to him in an audible voice!
The three temptations were done through:
1.The lust of flesh: Immediate gratification of physical desire.
2 . The lust of the eyes: The desire of the mind for material wealth and power.
3 . The pride of life: Using the power of God for vain glory!
The Lord Jesus rejected and aborted these lusts, so they did not conceive to bring forth sin! He overcame by the Word of God that was in his heart.
Psalms 119:11 KJV
Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.
Similarly, we can overcome all temptations like the Lord Jesus did, by releasing the power of God through:
1 . Praying in tongues and travail as a daily habit (Heb. 5:7).
Mark 1:35 KJV
And in the morning, rising up a great while before day, he went out, and departed into a solitary place, and there prayed.
2 . Speaking God’s Word with our mouths at least once every six hours (Deut. 6:7).
Deuteronomy 30:14 KJV
But the word is very nigh unto thee, in thy mouth, and in thy heart, that thou mayest do it.
We then direct this power, by frequently asking God for mercy with thanksgiving with our thoughts and at the onset of every temptation.
Colossians 4:2 KJV
Continue in prayer, and watch in the same with thanksgiving;
As we practice this, we will gradually overcome all temptations and so inherit the crown of life in this lifetime (Mk. 10:29-30), and grow to become spiritual Kings (1Jn. 4:17).
James 1:12 AMP
Blessed (happy, to be envied) is the man who is patient under trial and stands up under temptation, for when he has stood the test and been approved, he will receive [the victor’s] crown of life which God has promised to those who love Him.
