OVERCOMING THE WORLD
1 John 5:4-6 NKJV
For whatever is born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world–our faith. Who is he who overcomes the world, but he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God? This is He who came by water and blood–Jesus Christ; not only by water, but by water and blood and it is the Spirit who bears witness, because the Spirit is truth.
Here, the Bible tells us that as born-again Christians in Jesus Christ, we are to overcome the world. “The world” is the spiritual power released through the air, which operates on the sinful nature in the minds and bodies of men, activating the lusts of the flesh, of the eyes and the pride of life (1Jn. 2:16; Eph. 2:2-3).
We overcome the world using the weapons of love: the blood, the Word and the power of the Holy Spirit released through praying in tongues.
Satan opposes our walk in love by using the lusts of the flesh, so that he can hinder us from pleasing God and so receiving answers to our prayers (1Jn. 3:21-23).
When we walk in love, we enforce God’s will on the earth and cause His dominion to be made manifest in the earth (Luke 11:2).
We use the weapons of love by:
1. Cleaning with the blood – by confessing our sins. This is done practically and simply by saying in faith and with understanding ‘ Father I confess our sins’ frequently throughout each day.
This will cause a regular cleansing of our sins, the sins of members of our immediate families, households and those we are in physical relational contact with throughout each day (1Jn. 1:7-10, 2:1-2).
2. Loading with the life of God using the name of Jesus and the Word of God. This is practically done by simply saying, in faith and with understanding, ‘ In Jesus name we have life’ frequently throughout each day.
This will cause a measure of the life of God (living water) to flow in and through you, for you and those under your sphere of influence (Jn. 20:31; 2Pet. 1:2-4).
3. Firing by the Spirit by praying frequently, briefly but fervently in tongues throughout the day. This releases the power or the ‘fire’ of the Holy Spirit to ‘burn’ up the sin-nature in the mind and flesh of yourself and those in your sphere of influence, so edifying yourself and them (Matt. 3:11; Jude 20).
By doing these things diligently, you are edifying yourself and others in love and overcoming the world (Eph. 4:15-16).
Furthermore, by using these weapons of love, you are keeping your ‘eye’ or, mind, single, so that the light of the life of God in your spirit or ‘lamp’ can shine brightly, through your physical body into the world around you, by your good works of love which they can see (Luke 11:33-36; Matt. 5:14-16).
