SPIRITUAL FATHERS
OLUBI JOHNSON
Galatians 4:19 (KJV)
My little children, of whom I travail in birth again until Christ be formed in you.
A spiritual father is one whose prayers, teachings and life example have caused the Christ character to be formed in you.
It is possible to have more than one spiritual father, although there are not many people who can actually qualify to be spiritual fathers (1Cor. 4:15-16).
This is because it is not just the teachings alone but also the prayer in the Spirit, with travail, and the life example of the Fathers that cause the Christ character to be formed in the saints.
Following Fathers
It is vital to follow spiritual fathers by obeying their teachings and instructions and imitating their examples, because this is the only way you can get the hidden wisdom and instruction that is necessary to grow into the perfection and fullness of Christ.
Spiritual fathers, by revelation and experience through sufferings, are mature enough to dig out the `hidden manna’ of the Word and put it together for you to see easily (Prov. 23:23).
When you do not submit to their teachings you can end up `wrongly dividing’ the Word of truth and enter into error. Such people often end up running from one fellowship, conference, seminar, or church to another without any results, roaming around in the wilderness, as it were (Deut. 25:17-18).
True Fathers and Positional Fathers
1Corinthians 4:15-16 KJV:
For though ye have ten thousand instructors in Christ, yet have ye not many fathers: for in Christ Jesus I have begotten you through the gospel. Wherefore I beseech you, be ye followers of me.
Obviously not everybody who says he is a father is actually one. There are different categories of fathers in the Church: positional fathers, developing fathers, and fully developed fathers.
A positional father is not a true father, but only someone in a position of authority in the Church, through whom God is ruling by means of the external anointing of the Holy Spirit, rather than the internal anointing of their character and the enlarged capacity of their spirits.
True Fathers travail in intercession
Sadly this is the position of many Church leaders today. God has little confidence in them because they have not learned obedience and the fear of God by the things they have suffered, through daily prayer with strong crying, or travail, like the Lord Jesus did (Heb. 5:7).
However, God at this time is raising up for us true Fathers in this third day, that will be clouds who will give covering to the assemblies of Zion, and release the latter rain teaching of the Word of God, that will cause the fruit of the Spirit to come forth from the ground of the hearts of the saints.
So spiritual Fathers set up the landmarks of the Word of God. These landmarks should not be removed (Prov. 22:28, 23:10).
