THE LEADING OF THE SPIRIT
Isaiah 30:21 KJV
And thine ears shall hear a word behind thee, saying, This is the way, walk ye in it, when ye turn to the right hand, and when ye turn to the left.
The Lord Jesus was led by the Spirit through three things: the witness, the Word and the supernatural Works of the Holy Spirit (Jn. 5:36-40).
As Christians, we are to be led by these same things:
1. The witness (Rom.8:16).
God leads us from the inside out and not from the outside in. The first thing we get is a witness of the Spirit: this is a thought that comes from God.
Even men who are not born-again get thoughts from God, though in their unregenerate state they may not realize it is from God (Rom. 2:14-16).
However, when we are born-again we will know that this witness is from God, because it comes with an inner peace and joy acting as an umpire (Col. 3:15).
2. The written Word (Is. 8:20).
The witness is confirmed through Scripture. It will agree with the spirit, not just the letter, of the principles of God in Scripture and the character of God.
Once you have the witness and the Word on an issue, that thing is true because you have two witnesses: the witness and the Word (2Cor. 13:1).
However, many times there is a significant time interval between when you get a witness from God on an issue, and when the corresponding, confirming Word comes. We need to be patient and wait on God in prayer and the Word, before the confirming Word concerning a witness we have, comes (Is. 28:16).
3. The supernatural works of the Spirit (Mk. 16:20).
This acts as a third witness through independent prophetic or apostolic prophecy, preaching or teaching. This helps us check against any inaccuracies in the witness, and confirming Word we have received in our own hearts (Pro. 28:26).
It also establishes the timing of the truth that has been established by the witness and the Word. Something may be truly from God but the timing may still be afar off (Dan. 10:1).
As the time of fulfilment approaches, God will confirm this timing by the supernatural works of the Spirit.
All God has planned for us in our lives in Christ, including the knowledge and wisdom it will take to fulfil it, is hidden in the Scripture. However, it takes time in the Word and prayer to find it (Col. 2:3; Rev. 22:19).
Through the witness of the Spirit and the Scriptures, you can hear God’s voice, see His form or shape and then do His works!
