THE SURE MERCIES OF DAVID
Isaiah 55:3 KJV
Incline your ear, and come unto me: hear, and your soul shall live; and I will make an everlasting covenant with you, even the sure mercies of David.
What are the sure mercies of David?
The sure mercies of David are a guarantee that we will obtain the mercies of God. God’s mercies enable us to be ultimately victorious no matter what happens, or how perilous the difficulties that are allowed to come our way (Isa. 55:3).
It is by the mercies of God we will not be consumed (Lam. 3:22). It is by the mercies of God we will present our bodies as living sacrifices and be found faithful (Rom. 12:1).
To really appreciate this we need to contrast the mercy of God in the life of David and Saul. While the mercy of God was taken from Saul when he sinned, the mercy of God was still given to David when he sinned (1Chron. 17:13).
Why was this so? Is God partial, or a respecter of persons?
Of course not! The reason for this was the difference between David’s and Saul’s heart. God does not judge us only by our outward deeds, but by the type of heart we have developed over time (1Sam. 16:7).
David’s sin of adultery and murder seemed to be more grievous on the surface, than Saul’s sin of incomplete sacrifice.
However, David had a broken and contrite heart of genuine repentance (Psa. 51:17), in contrast with Saul’s heart of rebellion and stubbornness, which caused God to show David more mercy than He did Saul (1Sam. 15:22-23).
How do you get the sure mercies of David?
1 . By exercising your heart with righteous practices . Doing this makes your heart become fixed or established in righteousness, and so it will be impossible for you to continue in any sin (Psa. 112:7-9).
2 By exercising yourself daily in honesty of heart (Psa. 15:12). Speaking the truth to yourself in your heart, prayer and obedience, even when you have to suffer to do so (Heb. 5:7-8).
As we practice these things, we will obtain the sure mercies of David, that will turn our captivities into freedom and restore our fortunes (Psa. 126:1-6)
Psalm 126:1-2 NKJV
When the LORD brought back the captivity of Zion, We were like those who dream. Then our mouth was filled with laughter, And our tongue with singing. Then they said among the nations, “The LORD has done great things for them.”Jude 1:21 NKJV
Keep yourselves in the love of God, looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life.
