THE VIRTUOUS CHRISTIAN

Proverbs 31:25, 30 KJVS
Strength and honour are her clothing; and she shall rejoice in time to come. Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but a woman that feareth the Lord , she shall be praised.

Though Proverbs 31:10-31 speaks of a virtuous woman, it also applies to a virtuous pastor and church collectively, and a virtuous Christian individually. The Church universal is typified by a woman and her ‘husband’, the Lord Jesus (Eph. 5:25), who sits among the elders (Prov. 31:23; Rev. 5:6).

So, we see that ALL Christians, male and female, should develop and perfect the virtues of this virtuous woman (Rev. 19:7).

1) We should develop Spiritual Strength by getting up early to pray, read and study God’s Word, to be able to feed our household spiritually:

Prov. 31:17, 25, 15, 27.
“She girdeth her loins with strength, and strengtheneth her arms.
Strength and honour are her clothing; and she shall rejoice in time to come.
She riseth also while it is yet night, and giveth meat to her household, …
She looketh well to the ways of her household, and eateth not the bread of idleness.”

2) We should be Industrious:

Prov. 31:13, 16, 18, 19, 21, 22, 24.
“She seeketh wool, and flax, and worketh willingly with her hands.
She considereth a field, and buyeth it: with the fruit of her hands she planteth a vineyard
She perceiveth that her merchandise is good: her candle goeth not out by night.
She layeth her hands to the spindle, and her hands hold the distaff.
She is not afraid of the snow for her household: for all her household are clothed with scarlet.
She maketh herself coverings of tapestry; her clothing is silk and purple.
She maketh fine linen, and selleth it; and delivereth girdles unto the merchant.”

3) We should be Loving and Generous:

Prov. 31: 20, 26.
“She stretcheth out her hands to the poor; yea, she reacheth forth her hands to the needy
She openeth her mouth with wisdom; and in her tongue is the law of kindness.”

We develop and perfect these virtues by faith as we perfect the love of God in us.

This requires us to cleanse our hearts regularly by the blood of Jesus (Heb. 13:20-21; 1Jn.1:9), as we confess our sins. This is how we maintain fellowship with God and access to the life of God.

Access to the life of God enables the life to flow when we speak, confess and pray from the Word of God (1Jn. 2:5) that promise us these virtues of the love of God.

It is then this living Word, that is full of God’s life, that is processed into reality by the power of the Holy Spirit (1Jn. 4:12-13) as we pray in the Spirit with travail (Gal. 4:19).
