VESSELS UNTO HONOUR
OLUBI JOHNSON
2Timothy 2:20-21 KJV
But in a great house there are not only vessels of gold and of silver, but also of wood and of earth; and some to honour, and some to dishonour. If a man therefore purge himself from these, he shall be a vessel unto honour, sanctified, and meet for the master’s use, and prepared unto every good work.
VESSELS here speak of our physical bodies. The great house speaks of the universal Body of Christ.
Paul reveals here that there are two categories of vessels:
(1) Gold and silver: which are unto honour, or special uses.
(2) Wood and earth: which are to dishonour, or ordinary mundane uses.
He gives the condition for any vessel to be one unto honour: PURGING. This means that all start as wood and earth due to the sin nature in the soul and body.
However, God desires that we should all be vessels unto honour. It is the sin nature that we inherited from Adam that flowed into man’s spirit, soul and body that short-circuited God’s glory in man (Rom. 3:23).
It is the glory of God that confirms the ultimate honour of God on man (Ps.8:5). God, once again, desires to bestow honour on man through His glory (Est.6:6-8). This is our destiny: To inherit the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ through the glorious gospel (2Thes. 2:14; 1Tim. 1: 11).
So let us;
Imitate the way the Lord Jesus prayed (Heb. 5:7). He prayed fervently in the Spirit with tongues and travail, with the right attitude of meekness and lowliness of heart (Matt. 11:29). This was how He, Who had no sin in Him, was able to keep Himself from being contaminated by the spiritual death ( the sin nature) in the air around Him.
This is also how we, who still have residual sin in our souls and bodies, are expected to purge out the sin nature from the soul and body (2Cor.7:1), using the blood (Heb.13: 20-21), the Word (1Jn. 2: 5) and the power of the Holy Spirit (1Jn. 4:12,13).
We will then be able to more effectively serve God with our spirits (Rom.1: 9) by standing in the gap to intercede for men, and our prayers will avail much (Jas.5:16) just like Abraham’s prayers availed for Lot (Gen.18:28-32).
As we practice these things daily, we become vessels that are sanctified (1Thes. 4:3-4, 5:23), causing us to be prepared unto every good work like our Lord Jesus (Acts 10:38).
